Tour The Ramon Crater:
Israel's Grandest Canyon
The Ramon Crater is a breathtaking piece of God's handiwork, unparalleled anywhere else on the planet. The mighty mountain that once rose here was swept away by the forces of wind and water, leaving layers of painted desert, high, rocky crags, and a deep valley, which is home to unique flora and fauna and rejoices with wildflowers after the winter rains.
As you tour the Ramon Crater by bus, jeep or on foot and explore its fascinating visitors center, you'll experience the grand sweep of the Ramon Crater story - not only a masterpiece of nature, but a 'highway', blazed by the Israelite kings some 3,000 years ago.
not only a masterpiece of nature, but a 'highway', blazed by the Israelite kings some 3,000 years ago. You'll see remnants of milestones recalling that during the Roman period, the Ramon Crater became a branch of the Incense Route, bringing spices like frankincense and myrrh, medicines and costly textiles from the east to the ports of the Mediterranean Sea.
From the Ilan Ramon Lookout on the crater's edge, you'll spy seven basalt hills, named in memory of Israel's first astronaut and his fellow-crew members of NASA Space Shuttle Columbia, courageous explorers of our universe, whose magnificence you'll discover once again from the depths of the Ramon Crater.
